Elon Musk has become the world's first trillionaire after shares of his rocket company SpaceX soared in Wall Street's biggest initial public offering (IPO) of stock.

Despite the company currently losing money, Musk was able to whip up enthusiasm for the IPO on June 12, with shares in SpaceX jumping more than 19%. From 1980 to 2025, the typical company going public has seen a 7% jump in its first day of trading.

SpaceX opened on Wall Street around midday on June 12 at $150 a share, then rose to around $168, before finishing the day just below $161.

Between his holdings in SpaceX and Tesla, where he is also CEO, Musk is now worth an estimated $1.1 trillion, according to Forbes.

The successful IPO is a sign that investors are looking past the billions SpaceX is losing and betting that its investments in satellites, orbital data centers and AI will pay off in the future.

Musk said SpaceX, founded in 2002, went public because it needs money to fund its lofty ambitions of putting satellites and data centers in space and eventually establishing a human colony on Mars.
